How to keep the kids amused – places to visit and things to do

Here at Barnharrow Holiday Pods we are incredibly lucky to be surrounded by the most fantastic variety of things to do. Whether you are looking for activities that will keep your children happy or you are simply a big kid yourself, here are just some ideas to whet your appetite!

Plan a Beach Day

Not much can beat a day on the beach with the kids. Head to Portpatrick when the tide is out and you’ll find a lovely sandy beach. It’s perfect for paddling, making sandcastles and searching the many rockpools for marine creatures. St Medans Beach at Monreith is also sandy and if your kids enjoy rockpooling, they’ll have a great time exploring the rocky outcrops. A trip to the Mull of Galloway will give you the choice of many sandy bays, including Ardwell Bay, a lovely sheltered cove and the perfect spot for a picnic. A visit to the lighthouse is not to be missed, but you’ll need some energy to climb the 115 steps to the top!

Fancy Horsing Around?

You don’t have to be an experienced rider to enjoy pony trekking. Three Lochs Trekking Centre in Newton Stewart is well set up for family groups, with horses of different sizes for children and adults.

Do Something Sweet!

Okay, we know that too much chocolate is naughty but you’re on holiday and what’s not to like about a chocolate workshop at The Cocoabean Company!  Send the kids in on their own – while you act like grown-ups and sip coffee in the café – or involve the whole family, you know it makes sense. Good to know – there are play areas indoors and out so the kids can run off their excess energy.

Ice cream making is also good fun and Cream O’Galloway  runs workshops suitable for children aged 5+. Naturally, there is a fabulous ice cream parlour on site where you can enjoy the farm’s delicious ice cream. And to make the most of your visit, why not challenge the entire family to a round of Crazy Golf or Crazy Croquet.

Have a Splashing Time!

There is a swimming pool at Merrick Leisure Centre in Newton Stewart or The Ryan Centre, Stranraer. Do check the pool timetable for public swim sessions, which can vary throughout the week. If you visit on a weekend, there are several free sessions for under 18s, as well as a fun hour with inflatables. More water-based fun can be found at Three Lochs Watersports Centre. From kayaking and paddleboarding to riding a jet ski, all ages are well catered for.

Befriend an Alpaca

Whether you own a pet or not, you’re probably well aware that stroking animals has a wonderfully calming effect. It’s not every day your kids will get to cuddle an alpaca so don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful experience. Alpacas are part of the camel family and originate from South America. Calm and sociable, they love being in the company of people. At Galloway Alpacas, close to Gatehouse of Fleet, you can enjoy a meet and greet or take one for a walk in beautiful countryside, whilst learning more about these gorgeous animals.

Go Wild!

Why not embrace the wonderful Scottish surroundings and get back to nature. At the nearby Red Deer Range in Galloway Forest Park you can spot the resident red deer from the viewing area and maybe feed them! (don't forget to take carrots with you!) – if you’re lucky you’ll also see birds of prey. While you’re there it’s worth stopping off at the Wild Goat Park where you can see a herd of British Primitive Goats with their distinctive hairy coats and long horns.

Whether you're exploring nature, unleashing creativity, or simply enjoying quality time together, these kid-friendly activities are just a few things to ensure you make memories that last a lifetime!
