Barnharrow Holiday Pods

Rainy Days can still be fun at Barnharrow Holiday Pods

Rain will only spoil a holiday break if you let it. Of course, a gloriously sunny day is always a bonus but if the weather is looking a bit grim don’t be put off, we’ve got some great ideas for things to do.

Explore Wigtown

Over the last 25 years Wigtown has undergone an incredible transformation and is now renowned as a ‘book town’ with countless book shops and a vibrant mix of thriving businesses. A great place if you fancy a spot of shopping or browsing – we recommend visiting Reading Glasses for their delicious cakes – Wigtown is also well placed for exploring the Machars peninsula should the weather brighten up. If you’re visiting later in the year, there is a Book Festival that runs for 10 days and features over 200 events – a must for literary lovers!

mull of galloway

Visit the Mull of Galloway

Take a drive to the southern-most point in Scotland and you’ll be rewarded with the breathtaking natural beauty of the Mull of Galloway.  You can take a tour of the lighthouse, which was built by Robert Stevenson in 1828, and climb to the top – if the weather clears the views are spectacular! There is also an interesting exhibition where you can learn more about the lighthouse. The Gallie Craig Coffee House is nearby and well worth a visit.

Learn about Gems

Head to Creetown and spend a fascinating time in the Creetown Gem Rock Museum.  The museum has an impressive collection of gems, as well as more unusual exhibits such as a fossilised dinosaur egg. The Crystal Cave is a wonderful experience and there is a great audio-visual presentation if you want to learn more about minerals and gemstones.

DISTILLERY TOURS IN DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY

Book a Distillery Tour

There are several within easy reach of Barnharrow Holiday Pods, how lucky is that! Bladnoch Distillery  has been producing Single Malt Scotch Whisky for over 200 years and is the world’s oldest privately owned distillery. Bladnoch offers a choice of two tours – naturally, both include tasting. Crafty Distillery,  meanwhile, offers an altogether more modern experience.

Set up in 2017, Crafty has quickly earned a reputation for its Single Malt Scotch Whisky, gin and vodka and has won many awards. Again, several tours are available – one that introduces all three spirits, the other is all about the gin!

Cosy up in your Pod

Get the wood burner going, make a brew and bunker down until the rain passes. Why not simply take advantage of going nowhere and read a book, play a board game or cards (each pod has a selection of games), or just allow your mind to drift!

You will always find something to do regardless of the weather!
